Getting Moving

There are a few basic techniques that need mastering before you begin driving on busy roads and traffic, you will need to have a good working knowledge of the various controls with an ability to co-ordinate both the hand and foot controls together. A good knowledge of the rules of the road and what constitutes good driving behaviour with respect for other drivers being at the forefront.

Vehicle Checks

Before you hit the road it is wise to complete a quick check on your vehicle, it is a great habit to get into. The everyday checks you need to perform are making sure your windscreens and mirrors are clean and that your lights and brake lights are in good working order.

The more periodic checks involve checking your vehicles fluid levels are topped up, this is the oil, water levels in the radiator, brake fluids, battery top up and windscreen fluid.

Turning the key and starting the engine

After you have made the preliminary checks and you are seated behind the driving wheel you need to familiarize yourself with a routine or drill that you should carry out every time before you turn the engine over.

  • Check that the gear lever is in a neutral position

  • Ensure the handbrake is on fully

  • Switch on the ignition by turning the key, observe the warning lights that come on.

  • Turn the key further and operate the starter

  • Release the starter as the engine starts running.

When the engine starts you may need to press the accelerator a little to help the engine run, the warning lights should all go out once the engine is running, if they are still lit then you should refer to the vehicle manual to indicate if there is a problem. You should now be able to move off….

Moving Off

Begin by pushing the clutch to the floor and moving the gear lever into first gear. Your right foot should be on the accelerator and your left on the depressed clutch, as your foot presses slowly down on the accelerator your left foot should be slowly releasing the clutch. You will hear the biting point in the tone of the engine.
